Imagine traveling back in time to 1750, not just anywhere, but to Switzerland — a country now known for its wealth. But back then, things were vastly different. In 1740, Switzerland, like much of Europe, was grappling with unemployment, poverty, and a bleak future. Thousands had no choice but to embark on a risky journey across the ocean to America in search of a better life.

The journey was arduous, starting on foot from remote villages to the nearest city, then to a port where ships traded European labor for American goods. These hopeful migrants embarked on a final voyage to New York, the gateway to the New World. But the future wasn’t guaranteed — some struck gold and prospered, while others ended up on the streets, relying on charity to survive.

This story echoes in my family history. One of my ancestors made this perilous journey to California during the Gold Rush, only to return empty-handed years later.

Today, Europe faces a different yet eerily similar challenge. Instead of an overpopulated continent with limited opportunities, Europe now has abundant opportunities but lacks the workforce to seize them. This situation…
